In Hooked, Emily McIntire delivers a dark, twisted reimagining of the classic Peter Pan tale, centering on James “Hook,” a powerful and ruthless man hellbent on destroying his lifelong enemy, Peter Michaels. When Peter’s daughter, Wendy, wanders into James’ bar, she becomes the perfect pawn in his revenge scheme—until obsession begins to blur into something deeper. Wendy, naive yet curious, is drawn to his dangerous world and magnetic pull, even as red flags flare around her. As their tangled relationship deepens, lines between love and vengeance blur, and both must decide whether they’re playing the game—or being played. This modern, steamy, and morally gray retelling is part revenge fantasy, part forbidden romance, and entirely addictive.
The Vibes: Dark Romance Lite with a Familiar Twist
You already know the setup here: this is a Peter Pan reimagining, but make it sexy, suspenseful, and just a little bit dangerous. If you’re in the mood for something dark but not disturbing, Hooked is the perfect bridge into that world. It gives just enough bite to feel edgy, but keeps your blood pressure (mostly) stable.
You’re not picking this up to have your heart shattered or to clutch your pearls. You’re picking this up because you want a little obsession, a lot of tension, and a morally gray man in a tailored three-piece suit who is going to make “kidnapping” seem like a thrilling vacation.
James “Hook” Barrie: Unhinged But Make It Hot
Let’s be honest—Hook is the whole reason we’re here. He’s smooth, dangerous, dominant, and knows how to read a woman. And while the author tells us he’s a dark and brooding villain, what we see is a man who’s a little damaged, a lot in control, and deeply obsessed with Wendy.
Is he unhinged? Sure.
Is he scary? No. Not really.
Is he going to seduce you and then ruin your plans for the rest of the day? Absolutely.
Hook is the type of fictional bad boy you want when you’re dipping your toes into the morally gray end of the pool—but not quite ready to dive in with, say, Zade Meadows a la Haunting Adeline.
Spice Level: Quality Over Quantity
This is not a spice-drenched novel, and that’s okay. What is here? Is hot. Especially that first time—equal parts discovery and surrender—which really delivers that “oh this is actually getting good” moment.
The sex scenes aren’t jam-packed in every chapter, but when they show up, they do what they need to do: build character chemistry, progress the plot, and keep you turning the page with a blush on your cheeks.
IS THIS BOOK FOR YOU?
- If you’re new to dark romance, this is a great entry point
- If you want a villain love interest who’s not terrifying
- If you love classic fairy tale retellings with adult themes
- If you’re looking for a quick, low-commitment read with a fun edge
This isn’t for you if you’re craving something truly taboo or loaded with high-stakes danger. But if you’re in your “I want a twisted love story I can finish in a weekend” era? Hooked has you covered.
Final Thoughts: A Suit-Wearing Villain Who Will Keep You Reading
Between the addictive pacing, the grumpy/obsessed Hook, and the surprisingly well-developed connection between him and Wendy, Hooked hits exactly what it aims for: a seductive, creative dark romance that’s just twisted enough.
You won’t cry. You won’t lose sleep. But you will probably fan yourself a few times and then wonder if it’s weird to add a fictional pirate CEO to your list of dream men.
Maybe you don’t need all background to get to the unhinged, but you could read a good spicy scene, then here are your spicy chapters, PLEASE check your Trigger Warnings: 4, 14, 20-21, 35, 38, 41, & 47.
