In Caught Up, Navessa Allen delivers a gritty, obsessive, and irresistibly hot story about second chances, dark desires, and the magnetic pull of forbidden love. Nico “Junior” Trocci has always known that Lauren Marchetti was too good for him—light to his dark, soft to his sharp edges—but when he finds out the shy girl he once knew now runs in provocative circles he lurks in, his curiosity turns into something far more consuming. Lauren, bold and confident, is drawn to the mysterious man who watches from the shadows, unaware he’s the boy who broke her heart years ago. Their chemistry is explosive, their flirtation addictive, and the line between love and obsession blurs as their past and present collide. With danger lurking in the background and their connection heating to a boiling point, Caught Up is a high-heat romance about surrendering to the one person you were never supposed to touch.
He’s Got the Moves, But Does He Have the Plot?
A spicy mafia romance that delivers kink but not quite the kick.
Let’s talk about Caught Up—a dark, seductive romance that had all the right ingredients: a reformed bad boy, a fearless sex-positive heroine, and a dash of second-chance tension… but somehow, the chemistry never quite reached a full boil.
We were so ready to fall head over heels for Nico “Junior” Trocci. He’s the broody type who watches from the shadows, burns with jealousy, and has no problem getting on his knees (you know… in all the best ways). And to his credit, Junior absolutely excels in the spice department. His scenes with Lauren are hot, creative, and confidently written. He respects her body, her choices, and her career as a sex worker without batting an eye. Green flags galore in that department, and we love a man who supports his woman with zero judgment.
BUT—here’s the rub. Junior’s backstory? Just didn’t hit. The emotional stakes that kept him from being with Lauren felt… flimsy. It was hard to believe they spent 10 years apart over reasons that seemed more like a plot device than a real barrier. And if their separation felt thin, their reunion didn’t exactly fill in the gaps either. The second-chance aspect is supposed to make your heart ache and swoon, but this one left us more puzzled than breathless.
We Are All Ears
We have to give credit where it is due, Teddy Hamilton did a great job bringing Junior to life. Listening to Caught Up was an enjoyable time. Overall for both the audio and physical book, Caught Up isn’t Lights Out. But if you manage expectations going in, the result is a pleasurable listening experience.
Still, Caught Up has its place. If you’re new to mafia romance or just in the mood for something low-commitment with a heavy hit of kink and a sex-positive twist, this book checks the box. But if you’re a seasoned reader who’s seen what a dark romance plotline can really do when it leans into its emotional weight (cough Josh from Lights Out cough), Junior may feel like a beautiful red flag in a suit—memorable for the spice, but not living rent-free in your head.
In case you just want some of the spicy times without reading or listening to the full book, here are those chapters for you: 3, 9-11, 15, 18-19, 22, 26, 31, 34 & BONUS CHAPTER.
