Beach Read is the story of two authors—January Andrews, a romance writer struggling to believe in love after uncovering her father’s secrets, and Augustus “Gus” Everett, a brooding literary fiction author whose works are soaked in melancholy. They couldn’t be more different, except for two things: they’re both battling writer’s block, and they’ve ended up as next-door neighbors in neighboring beach houses.

When a challenge is proposed—Gus will attempt to write a romance novel, and January will venture into literary fiction—the two embark on a summer of unconventional “research” trips. From rom-com worthy outings to death cult interviews, their creative journeys collide with personal discoveries and a gradual, undeniable connection that promises to rewrite their perspectives on love, life, and the “happily ever afters” they never believed in.

Warm Vibes, Sharp Wit, and That Sweet Slow Burn

We dove right into Beach Read by Emily Henry, a book that has everyone swooning and wiping away a few stray tears, and we suggest you do the same! Whether you’re curled up by a fire in the winter or lounging by the pool in the summer, this book will wrap you in a cozy blanket of emotions and witty banter. Let’s break down what makes this love story between January and Gus an unforgettable journey.

The Tropes We Love (and Why They Work)

Emily Henry doesn’t just sprinkle in tropes—she seamlessly blends them. Beach Read is a delicious combination of:

  • Grumpy-Sunshine: Gus is our brooding pessimist, while January radiates warmth and optimism.
  • Enemies-to-Lovers: These two start as reluctant rivals, both bestselling authors struggling with their own creative and emotional blocks. Seamlessly blending in a pit stop at friendship into so much more. The evolution of their relationship is organic, heartwarming, and so satisfying to witness.

The balance between these tropes is flawless. Nothing feels forced—it’s a natural progression that keeps you hooked from start to finish.

Plot Depth, Emotional Payoff, and Light Spice

While Beach Read is lighthearted and romantic, it doesn’t shy away from heavier topics, like grief and self-worth. January’s journey of coming to terms with her father’s secrets is emotional, but the ending doesn’t leave you feeling heavy. Instead, it offers a sense of closure and healing. And even though the book is told from January’s perspective, Gus’s inner struggles with his past and his feelings for her are beautifully conveyed.

Also, for those of you who like your romance books a little less explicit, Beach Read delivers perfectly. The tension is palpable, and the spicy scenes are tastefully written without being too graphic. It’s a great introduction to romance for anyone who might be hesitant to dive into the spicier end of the spectrum.

Gus Everett: A Book Boyfriend Worth Debating

Now, let’s talk about Gus. As a book boyfriend, Gus brings a lot to the table: witty banter, intelligence, and undeniable chemistry with January. But, he’s not perfect. His insecurity and emotional baggage make him a bit of a challenge—and while we love seeing his growth, we can’t ignore that he spends a good portion of the book pushing January away. If you’re into flawed, realistic characters who grow into better versions of themselves, Gus is your guy. But if you prefer your book boyfriends confident and sure of their feelings, Gus might not top your list.  And we feel comfortable admitting that because these are fictional men, and therefore we can choose to be more picky.

Final Thoughts

Beach Read is one of those rare romance novels that feels like a warm hug. It’s funny, heartfelt, and beautifully written. Whether you’re a seasoned romance reader or just dipping your toes into the genre, this book is a perfect pick. It’s an ideal gift, a cozy winter read, or the ultimate summer companion. Emily Henry’s debut will leave you feeling light, fluffy, and full of joy.

Unlike some other books we read, the spice in this one really means very little without the story, but if you want to revisit those steamy scenes, here you go: 14, 18, 20, 21, 23

That’s all for today, book besties! If you loved Beach Read as much as we did—or have some thoughts on Gus as a book boyfriend—we’d love to hear from you! Don’t forget to rate, review, and subscribe. And as always, may your books be beautiful, your banter be witty, and your endings be ever so happy. See you next time!
